Age-related eye disorders like macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of blindness. Diabetic eye complications, such as diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of vision loss worldwide. South Africans are facing an increasing risk of vision loss due to diabetes.

The number of diabetics in South Africa has increased at an alarming rate: from 1.3 million in 2010 to 4.5 million in 2019. Projections indicate that the number could climb to 6 million by 2030.
