Youth-onset Type 2 Diabetes Soared During COVID, Risking Increased Blindness Among Children

Diabetes suppliesYouth-onset type 2 diabetes contributes to blindness in children.  Unfortunately, the prevalence of this disease has doubled in the past 20 years, and ballooned 77% during the COVID-19 pandemic.  This disease also causes heart disease and kidney failure.

Type 2 diabetes most affects children with the following characteristics:
  • female
  • overweight
  • have a family history of diabetes
  • Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC)
  • have insulin resistance
The most prevalent cause of type 2 diabetes in children is obesity. In the U.S., nearly 33% of children are overweight.
